Limkokwing University Botswana held a 3-day Wellness Week for its students and staff from the 15th – 18th Oct 2014. The event was held at the University campus’ Plaza and Hall of Fame, under the theme ‘My Health, Your Health, Our Responsibility’.
It was held in effort to promote healthy lifestyle choices within the Limkokwing community through education and providing reading material for reference.
It started with talks from the nation’s leading health service providers like Doctors Aid which offered students access to affordable medical aid plans, Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynaecology and Obstetrics (JHPIEGO), which educated the audience on safe male circumcision, and Tebelopele Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre which offered counselling and free HIV/AIDS testing on the spot. Botswana Police Force representatives also addressed the audience on the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse, and the legal consequences one stood to face as a result of that.
The audience was given an opportunity to ask questions regarding their health and talk privately with health practitioners on sensitive issues. They were also offered free health screenings and preventive exams with an on-the-spot professional advice in staying healthy and preventing diseases.
The event was a collaboration between the Students Representative Council (SRC) and the University and campus coordinator from Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) as a way to give back within the Limkokwing community as well as ensure that both staff and students are at their optimum healthiest to be able to perform well academically.
