Porsche is synonymous with elegance, speed and unmatched design in luxury automobiles. This year, one young, up-and-coming talent has caught the industry's attention with his rim designs for Porsche, proving that creativity knows no bounds.
Meet Jiang Yichen, a recent graduate of Limkokwing University with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Industrial Design. Jiang has made his mark by participating in the esteemed “Art of Wheels – Rim Design Challenge 2022” and successfully securing a place in the Top 7. One of the key factors that set Jiang on the path to success was Limkokwing University’s unique approach to education, which emphasises practical experience and exposure to various industries. The university equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their chosen fields by preparing them for real-world challenges.
Jiang’s remarkable designs were crafted for iconic Porsche models: the 718 Boxster S and the 911. In a candid interview, he shared his thoughts on the competition, “I joined the Porsche rim design challenge, and it’s been a fascinating experience. This was my first attempt at designing rims, and I am glad of the opportunity.”
Throughout the process, Jiang found himself bridging the gap between design and engineering. He recounted, “Collaborating with industry engineers in the design process has been an invaluable learning curve. It presented challenges, but the rewards have been well worth the effort.”
The fruits of his labour were sweet, as one of Jiang’s designs was selected for production. “My design was among the top entries, and now they’re manufacturing the actual product in China,” he beamed with pride.
Interestingly, of the two Porsche rims Jiang designed during the competition, one caught the eye of a car owner who expressed interest in purchasing it. The other design was the one that propelled him to the Top 7. This young designer’s journey in the world of industrial design is just beginning, and his future appears as radiant and promising as the sleek, refined rims he has masterfully created. We can only imagine the heights he will reach in the automotive design industry.
