Women have made significant strides in many fields, but they are still underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Despite accounting for nearly half of the global workforce, women hold only a quarter of STEM jobs worldwide. There are many reasons for this, including stereotypes, a lack of female role models, and unconscious bias. However, with initiatives like those at Limkokwing University, more and more women are breaking down barriers and pursuing successful careers in STEM.
The Challenges Facing Women in STEM
One of the biggest challenges facing women in STEM is the pervasive stereotype that these fields are for men. This stereotype is perpetuated in a variety of ways, from media portrayals of scientists and engineers as male to the underrepresentation of women in these fields in popular culture. This can make it difficult for young girls to imagine themselves pursuing careers in STEM, leading many to choose different paths.
Another challenge facing women in STEM is the lack of female role models. While there are certainly many accomplished women in these fields, they are often not given the same level of recognition as their male counterparts. This can make it difficult for young women to find role models to look up to and aspire to emulate.
Finally, unconscious bias is a significant factor in the underrepresentation of women in STEM. Despite the best intentions of many professionals, biases can seep into the hiring process and promotion decisions, leading to women being overlooked for positions and opportunities.
According to the latest UNESCO Science Report, women hold just 28% of engineering positions worldwide , and only 32% of those in scientific research and development. Additionally, women are more likely to be concentrated in lower-paying fields within STEM, such as social sciences and life sciences .
