Limkokwing University Swaziland was awarded a gold medal for being an influential sponsor in its participation in the Mahamba Gorge hiking event held on the 28th – 29th March.
Mahamba Gorge is a scenic mountain canyon where the Mkhondo River from South Africa enters Swaziland. It is located in the Shiselweni region, a short distance from the Mahamba border post. It has been used as a community based tourism attraction since 2006.
The annual hike is the highlight of tourism attraction, raising funds that are used for youth initiatives, feeding impoverished children, and supporting small scale projects in surrounding communities. It was created as a tourism attraction and community fundraiser by the former Deputy Prime Minister, who is now the Regional Administrator of Shiselweni.
The event started with a family fun day on the 28th, which was organised and coordinated by the Limkokwing University community. The hike followed the next day, with many people making it to the top of the gorge. The event attracted over 7000 people, including top companies like Mobile Technology Network (MTN), and Swaziland Post & Telecommunications (SPTC) among others, and had lots of fun filled activities. Limkokwing University’s Hotel Management students prepared light refreshment offered to hikers on their way up and when they came down from the top of the gorge.
Limkokwing University also designed the certificates that were awarded hikers at the end of the event. The Shiselweni administration team praised the University’s creativity on the certificates, and expressed gratitude for the general participation and assistance
