7 November 2024
The recent CIMB Artober Art & Soul event in MITEC Kuala Lumpur showcased the remarkable influence of Limkokwing University's alumni in shaping Malaysia's creative landscape. At a thought-provoking talk hosted by the university, successful graduates joined industry veterans to explore the vital intersection of creativity, commerce, and cultural preservation.
The panel, moderated by Limkokwing University’s Group Chief Brand Officer Datuk Tiffanee Marie, featured an impressive lineup of the institution’s alumni. Among them was Arvy Harahap, former Communications Manager for Southeast Asia at Twitter, who brought valuable insights from his experience in global communications. “Your network is your net worth,” Harahap emphasised, highlighting the importance of building strong industry connections and supporting local talent.
Another distinguished alumnus, Mugen Rao, who has made significant strides in the entertainment industry as both a singer and actor, shared personal insights about nurturing creative talents. Drawing from his own journey, Mugen encouraged young artists to pursue their passions with conviction. “Art forms like dance and singing are integral to our cultural fabric,” he noted, emphasising the importance of confidence and dedication in artistic pursuits.
The university’s impact on digital innovation was represented by alumnus Hendra Wardi, co-creator of Kisah Bawah Tanah. Hendra’s six-year journey to bring his cartoon vision to life served as an inspiring example of perseverance in the creative field. “Every setback taught me valuable lessons,” he shared, encouraging aspiring creators to maintain their dedication despite challenges.
The forum also highlighted recent alumni achievements, including Malaysian designer Alvin Tam’s groundbreaking work with luxury fashion house Balenciaga. Alvin’s innovative handbag design, featuring built-in speakers, exemplifies how Limkokwing graduates are making waves on the global stage by combining creativity with technological innovation.
Industry leaders at the event, including entrepreneurial pioneer Datuk Jacqueline Fong and celebrated multi-disciplinary artist Raja Malek, provided a broader context about the creative economy’s challenges and opportunities. Datuk Jacqueline shared concerning statistics about Malaysia’s handicraft sector, which generated RM281 million in 2022 but still struggles to provide sustainable income for its 6,000 registered artisans.
Datuk Tiffanee Marie emphasised Limkokwing’s role as a cornerstone of Malaysia’s creative education since 1991. “With four out of six panelists being Limkokwing graduates, our alumni are demonstrating the values and skills honed at our institution across global industries,” she noted. “Their success in fields ranging from arts and entertainment to public relations and entrepreneurship showcases our university’s commitment to nurturing world-class talent.”
The broader CIMB Artober Art & Soul event, held at MITEC from October 25-27, featured an impressive collection of over 1,000 artworks from more than 100 artists, curated by 20 prominent local galleries. Current Limkokwing students joined their UiTM counterparts in presenting an innovative fashion show, demonstrating that the next generation is ready to follow in their successful alumni’s footsteps.
The event concluded with a strong emphasis on the need for supportive government policies and increased investment in the creative sector. As highlighted by the achievements of Limkokwing’s alumni, the creative industry represents not just cultural heritage but a vital economic force with global potential.
The success stories shared at Artober underscore Limkokwing University’s pivotal role in developing creative professionals who can compete and excel on the world stage while contributing to Malaysia’s cultural and economic growth.
