Fashion students connect to industry insiders at London Fashion Weekend
14 November 2015
Limkokwing’s Fashion & Retailing final semester students attended the London Fashion Weekend on 25 September 2015.
London Fashion Weekend (LFW) is a bi-annual event, and was held from 24 – 27 September at the world renowned Saatchi Gallery.
Limkokwing’s Fashion & Retailing students were given silver tickets to attend the event where they met established and upcoming fashion designers, attended the various fashion catwalk shows and expert panel talks, and were given the chance to get a sneak preview of the season’s most sought-after fashion trends before these were unveiled to the public.
From the expert panel talks, the students discovered the secrets of the fashion industry top brands, learning from the likes of big names such as Bella Freud and Henry Holland, the founder of the House of Holland. The students also were given the chance to see up close Peter Pilotto’s latest creation called Pilotto’s Autumn Collection, which is a throwback to the fifties with bold colours and myriad textures.
The students’ visit to LFW were not all fun and play, as they were tasked to take their experience of the fashion weekend and embed it into their own practice. This is because for their mid-term assignment, the Fashion & Retailing students were required to write a proposal for their own fashion brand.
The proposal must include intensive market research and images to support the brand. Visiting the LFW had given these students the opportunity to learn from the fashion industry’s insiders, and it was clear from the feedback gathered at the end of the visit that the LFW had influenced them greatly. Ideas such as collaborating with fashion magazines and established brands were voiced out by the students’ themselves, and would be incorporated into their proposals.
Collaboration with the industry is one of the methods that Limkokwing University uses to help students succeed in their chosen career choice. The LFW visit have enabled the students to network and connect with industry insiders and it is these connections that will be the key to their future success.
