Phomolo Lengola flew the flag of Lesotho high at the 2022 Commonwealth games - the largest multi-sport event held in England, Birmingham featuring thousands of world-class athletes and over 1.5 million spectators. Phomolo participated in 54kg boxing match category held from 28 July to 8 August 2022.
The tournament in Birmingham was not the first one Phomolo participated in. He participated for a couple of years in the youth category (under 18) prior and has been in the boxing ring from 2016 to date. Playing against elite boxers was however a new experience for him. This new experience did not intimidate him one bit, however, it motivated him to work harder in preparation for the next tournament.
The 22-year-old Diploma in Marketing student joined Limkokwing University to gain creative and innovative skills such as advertising various products and adding value to already existing ones by modifying them to fit the current market.
One of the valuable skills he gained was financial intelligence. He says he now manages and diversifies the little finances he has and makes the best out of them. He also says that he has learned a lot about teamwork and the value of friendships.
Of the valuable relationships Mr. Lengola has forged during his time in Limkokwing - one with his coach Mr. Mishak Letsoepa is timeless. Mr. Letsoepa is a Limkokwing staff member and a national coach of the Lesotho Boxing Association who has poured his heartfelt dedication into training Lesotho’s boxing champion.
“Limkokwing is a very good university. My advice to already enrolled students is to study hard and meet their lecturers halfway so they may graduate in record time. For those who are willing to join Limkokwing, don’t hesitate to apply. The university will give you all the necessary knowledge your future requires.
Phomolo’s five years plan includes but is not limited to; owning a retail store that sells basic needs in his village by 2026, taking part in the 2024 Olympic games and the next commonwealth games in 2026 and finally working for sports non-profit making organisations such as the Lesotho Olympic Committee and The Lesotho Recreational and Sports Committee.
