Limkokwing University students proved that they can hold their ground not just in the creative world but in sports as well at the recent Kejohanan Sukan Mahasiswa Zon Sarawak (Sarawak Zone Undergraduates Games).

In the highly charged volleyball competition, Limkokwing Borneo clinched gold as they beat Swinburne University in the final match two sets to one.

Patrick Pau, Gary Spencer, Janice Lim, Daniel Chuo, Nigel Lim, Chong Yu Yii, Nelson Ngui and Coonie Yong displayed high levels of competitiveness in the competition.

“The team trained hard prior to the event, and I admire the spirit, focus and energy they displayed throughout the competition,” said coach Arkin Kong, who is also a lecturer.

The chess team saw Walliyaddin Abdul Khalik, Abang Azman, James Yeo Seng and Chia Jia Chen playing a skilled game in the competition.

Abang Azman also scored the second highest points in the chess competition.

Despite persevering through hours of competition and giving their best against eight other colleges, they walked away with the silver.

“They were understandably upset about not winning the gold, but they are determined to do better at the games next year,” said Helena Goh, leader of the team and lecturer.

Meanwhile, Limkokwing Borneo walked away with the bronze medal with 1,483 points at the games.

Comprising of students Hazim Shahidan, Nur Fitri Ayu, Lorashikin Lawsin, Dennis Chung, Alfred Yap and Kevin Yeo, they played a relentless and determined game but could not win first place.

Nonetheless, they vowed to do their best in the next tournament.

About 400 athletes from various private colleges in Sarawak competed in the tournament’s 11 sport events.

The games are organised by Majlis Sukan IPTS Malaysia annually as a qualifying event for all tertiary level institutions throughout Malaysia.

Those who qualify will be eligible to participate in Sukan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi (SUKIPT) 2014 to be held in Shah Alam, Selangor.
