Adversity can either break your will or strengthen you to become an even better version of yourself. Powerful stories on overcoming adversity are sometimes the pickup you need to inspire you to keep on going; one such story is of Ts’eliso Mojela.
Overcoming his obstacles and not allowing his illness to get into the way of his dreams has awarded Ts’eliso Mojela a life of inspiration as an assistant lecturer in the Faculty of Communications, Media and Broadcasting.
Mojela joined Limkokwing University Lesotho in 2009 as a student of Bachelor of Arts in Broadcasting and Journalism. The enthusiastic fresher enjoyed the atmosphere of his campus, strived for success and believed that nothing could stop him from doing well and achieving his goals and aspirations.
Towards the end of 2011 things took an unexpected turn when Mojela was diagnosed with a giant cell tumor on the T12 spine which forced him to undergo rigorous radiation.
“It was a difficult period in my life, but I refused to worry as the word of God says that there is nothing impossible with God.”
This setback, however, did not erase Mojela’s passion at heart. As a result of extended visits to the hospital, he asked his lecturers to bring his assignments and course material to the hospital, so he does not lag behind academically.
At the end of his stay in hospital, Mojela had to depend on crutches for mobility and was later wheelchair bound as his condition worsened. This also did not deter him off his academic journey.
“It was very difficult for me to understand what was happening, but I knew that it was beyond my control. All I could do was to not give up on my dreams.”
Once Mojela blended back into varsity life, he bagged a few achievements of which he is proud of. He became an intern at Limkokwing university in the Sound and Music studio as a radio producer and presenter and further assisted his juniors with practical assignments for their enrolled courses. This became the silver lining of the dark cloud as happier days presented themselves more often into his life.
“I did not allow myself to be pitied by anyone because I did not see myself as wheelchair bound. The wheelchair was just a tool I used as a steppingstone to overcome my obstacles.”
He enjoyed himself as he sharpened paved way for his career through tasks he was assigned during his internship. He also gained a lot of experience by working closely with his supervisors and lecturers who guided him on how to apply the skills and knowledge he had learned in class onto his daily corporate tasks.
“Limkokwing University of Creative is the best place to be, a home to everyone regardless of your health situation, a place where discrimination doesn’t exist where everyone is given the golden opportunity to recognise their full potential. Join me, join us and discover your full potential.”
