Limkokwing University hosted an art and music exhibition of fifteen Middle Eastern countries’ culture on 30th April at the Hall of Fame. The event, titled Arabian Nights, was part of a prelude series of events leading to the upcoming Culture Festival.
Aimed at educating the multicultural Limkokwing University community on the diverse cultures and traditions of various Middle Eastern countries, the event was a mesh of lively creative activities including a fashion show showcasing an array of traditional attires, dance, music, and a special performance by Jeddah; a Saudi Arabian traditional music group.
Arabian Nights was the last of the event series, following the Courtyard Fiesta Bazaar which showcased Latin culture through bazaar stalls, and Savannah Shakedown; a music and dance event showcasing various African cultures.
The event attracted a culturally diverse crowd of over 300 students from Limkokwing and other universities. The students said the event and the other two prior to it were not only entertaining, but were also a platform for them to learn about other cultures in a very interesting way.
Pola Kimena; a dancer from Zambia, doing a Foundation in Design said he had picked up various traditional dance moves and creative designing aspects from other cultures through these events, and would be incorporating what he had learned both in dancing and his studies. He said learning about new cultures broadened his creative capabilities, as his designs would no longer only draw inspiration from his cultural background.
“When you are exposed to different cultures, your creativity is not limited to only your background, you are able to draw from other cultures to come up with something amazing,” he said.
He said he was looking forward to the Cultural Festival as he would get to learn even more about other cultures, saying it would be like “travelling the world in one place”, because he would get to experience cultures from 160 countries from the comfort of his university campus.
Held annually, Limkokwing University’s Cultural Festival 2015 brings together international cultures in one place, giving students an opportunity to learn about their peers traditions, food, cultures, and background upclose. This year’s event, which will be held on the 8th May; would be graced by international ambassadors and top industry experts. They and those attending would witness the massive cultural wealth and be part of one of the largest cultural exhibitions held in Malaysia.
