Reinventing the Hospitality and Entertainment Industry with KC and Pinkfish
10 January 2024
At the Limkokwing Creativity Series in December 2023, Kesavan Purusotman, known as KC, introduced Pinkfish, the music and art festival that encapsulates his vision of blending diverse creative expressions. As the founder, KC detailed the inception of Pinkfish as more than just a festival.
“It started as a one-day event,” he explained, “but it’s the amalgamation of different artists from around the world that truly defines Pinkfish.” The festival featured headliners like DJ Snake and local talents such as Joe Flizzow, integrated art installations, creating a holistic cultural experience. The uniqueness of Pinkfish, according to KC, lies not just in its lineup but in its overall experience – the colours, activations, and sensory experiences. This approach reflects his belief in the power of creativity to transform the conventional festival landscape into an immersive experience.
KC’s journey took a critical turn during the pandemic. With nightlife venues shuttered, he had to rethink his strategy. “Pivoting into the food and beverage industry was a necessity,” KC said. He saw this as a challenge and an opportunity to expand his creative horizons. This shift underscored his adaptability and commitment to exploring new realms within the hospitality and entertainment industry.
KC’s approach to creativity is pragmatic yet innovative. His philosophy revolves around infusing creativity into every endeavour. In the food and beverage industry, he emphasised the importance of presentation. He mentioned his venture into the food industry: “It’s about bringing a creative twist to traditional elements, like how we present our Malay cuisine at Chilli Kampung.” This approach carried over to Pinkfish, where the focus wasn’t solely on the performers. “It’s about the experience — from the moment you step in, it’s an immersion of senses,” KC emphasised.
KC passionately advocates for pursuing one’s passions, citing happiness and personal satisfaction as the true measures of success. He encourages individuals to engage in work that resonates with their interests, emphasising that long-term success stems from genuine passion. He believes success is rooted in genuine interest and dedication. He advised, “Find what you love doing. That’s where you’ll put in your best work.”
Limkokwing University, the backdrop for this insightful discussion, mirrors KC’s ethos of creativity and innovation. KC reflected on the role of education in shaping entrepreneurs, noting, “Limkokwing’s environment of creative exploration complements my philosophy. It’s where ideas meet execution.” Limkokwing’s approach to combining academic learning with practical, real-world experiences is a testament to its commitment to producing versatile and dynamic graduates, much like Kesavan Purusotman.
