In Love with Music

Written by Christine Chan

Critically acclaimed music composer, managing director of Nexus Creative, and alumnus of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology – Peter Wong Pooi Fatt – shares his story on a ‘nerd’ who fell in love with music and then blossomed into a star. Christine Chan has the story.

Managing Director of Nexus Creative, Peter Wong Pooi Fatt, is very frank about what attracted him to the music industry in the first place. “It was fate,” he explained

That fateful moment which he was speaking of happened during his post-SPM (Malaysian Examination Certificate) holidays. It was then that his father suggested him to take up music lessons at home by playing the piano and keyboard.

It has been a love affair ever since. “That’s when it all started,” explained the 33-year old composer, “it opened my eyes to a whole new perspective; a brand new life!”

Peter’s description of him falling for music as something ordained by fate may not be entirely true. He readily admits that his father used to play the harmonica as a hobby,  hinting that a heart for music may have already been running in his veins.

Nevertheless,  Peter confessed that until he was seventeen years old, he had never once had an ear for music. Before he began taking up music lessons, he was (by his own admission) a ‘science geek’ and a ‘nerd’ who had no other ambition apart from becoming a well-known scientist.

Today, Peter is a highly recognized music composer and graphic designer in the country. He is the man behind a string of high-profile projects such as the ‘Plight of the Palestinians’ music for a video shown in the XIII NAM Summit 2003, the ‘Kami Anak Malaysia’ song for Hari Patriotik 2003, the ‘PEACEVOLUTION’ album in August 2003, the sound and music for the Tak Nak Anti-Smoking Campaign, a 6-minute soundtrack for a video shown during the Perdana Global Peace Forum 2005, the opening and closing of the National Women’s Games 2005, entire music series for television commercials, and many, many more.

His company,  Nexus Creative, won the pitch to be the music composer for five documentaries broadcasted via Discovery Channel (Malaysia) in early 2008, including one which was directed by Lina Teoh. It is now involved in working on the music piece for Panasonic Malaysia’s television commercial.

His works have charmed many and won him numerous awards such as the Consolation Prize in the Informatics Jingle Competition in 1995 and in Spritzer’s first Asia Creativity Contest in 1997. Peter also won the Presidential Scholar Awards from Limkokwing University in 1998.

Limkokwing is an extraordinary, exhilarating and fun university to be in. The university trains the mind to be more critical and analytical and most importantly, it equips students with skills that are needed in the working world.

Peter’s talents are not limited to the music industry as he also shines as a professional graphic designer. He has won several awards from international web design competitions, including the popular and competitive coolhomepages.com web design ratings.

Peter credits Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in helping him in many ways leading to his success. “Limkokwing   University made an impact in my life in two main stages. The first was during my student days and the second was during my working days at the university.”

“Limkokwing is an extraordinary, exhilarating and fun university to be in,” said Peter, recollecting his days as a student under the Diploma in Graphic Design course, “The University helps the students to open their minds, teach them to analyze and instills various problem solving techniques. The university trains the mind to be more critical and analytical and most importantly, it equips students with skills that are needed in the working world.”

Working with Limkokwing University will give you immense experience and knowledge so that when you are out on your own, you are able to face anything and everything.

After studying at the university, Peter worked for four years with there and had the opportunity to work closely with Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Lim Kok Wing,  whom he remembers as an innovative and creative man.

“He is very detailed, highly knowledgeable and experienced. He takes the time to teach his staff one-on-one and exposes them as much as possible so that they can learn more and meet new people. Working with Limkokwing University will give you immense experience and knowledge so that when you are out on your own, you are able to face anything and everything.”

Peter also expresses his gratitude to the university for awarding him with a degree scholarship due to his outstanding performance. “The university has given me so many opportunities and I’m really thankful for it.”

Peter Wong’s greatest dream is to be able to make it to Hollywood one day. He aspires to score a motion picture project just like his idol, Hans Zimmer. In the meantime, he is extremely happy where he is, and is thankful to his wife – Jennifer Cheng, who has always been there for him since his university days – and his parents, whom he credits for his inspiration.

“It’s definitely fate that I’m now someone in the industry,” he closed.
