Relebohile Mamooe has realised her dream of working with those challenged of hearing. Now she’s working on fulfilling her ultimate dream: to see the establishment of an institution of higher learning for the deaf.
Since graduating from Limkokwing Lesotho, Relebohile Mamooe worked as a Presenter-Intern at Setsoto FM, a radio station in Ficksburg South Africa. A few months later she moved and did media monitoring and research at the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Lesotho, and also worked as a Sign Language Interpreter at the National Association of the Deaf, Lesotho. She worked on voluntary basis at both of the last two establishments.
Her experiences at the two establishments led to her current work as a Sign Language Interpreter for News and Current Affairs on Television Lesotho. She is also a lecturer of International Business Communication and Public Relations at Integrated Business Consultants College (IBC College) in Maseru. Besides her other hobbies, Relebohile writes proposals and does personal projects in line with her career.
“It is that energy I got from Limkokwing that motivated me not to think ‘out of the box’, but taught me that ‘there is in fact no box’ to think out of. Limkokwing taught me to multi-task, to reach out for the moon and to work towards being all that I wanted to be.”
The young woman of many hats declares her appreciation for Limkokwing University and reminisces on how much the University contributed to the person that she is today.
“I enrolled with Limkokwing Lesotho at the time when the public’s perspective about the university was not a very positive one. I had however, against all the little talks and rumours, made a personal research about the University and had been fully convinced that Limkokwing was the most suitable path to lead me into my future. I am today very proud to declare that not only were my expectations met at Limkokwing, but that they were over abundantly exceeded.”
Relebohile recalled that she found the University to be oozing with positive energy and life.
According to Relebohile, she had the words of the University’s Founder and President, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr. Lim Kok Wing, “with creativity the sky is the limit and those who are adventurous can mingle with the stars” ingrained into her memory, and she used these words to motivate her daily.
On her second year of studying Journalism and Media at Limkokwing Lesotho, Relebohile made the decision to enroll for sign language interpretation classes on weekends. This was to quench her thirst of always yearning to learn to communicate with to those challenged of hearing. She completed the course successfully and obtained a certificate one year later.
After graduating from Limkokwing Lesotho, Relebohile decided to further her sign language appreciation and enroll for short courses on sign language at WITS University, where she later obtained a Certificate in Sign Language at Level 2b. On the same year she also obtained a Certificate in Medical Interpreting from South Africa Translation Institution.
Relebohile is currently working on proposals to offer sign language interpretation as a staff development programme for the staff of Limkokwing Lesotho and other institutions of higher learning in the country.
Relebohile’s ultimate dream is to see the establishment of an institution of higher learning for the deaf.
