Why Study Information Technology?

25 July 2022

Technology underpins our lives. It’s in the alarm that woke you up this morning; the commute that got you to school or work; and the food on your table. It’s ingrained in every industry, from education through to engineering and entertainment. It helps remote communities conserve vital resources, creates more effective medicines, and keeps us safe. It allows us to form networks right around the planet and far into space.

Most students are nervous about finding a job after graduation. While nothing is guaranteed when it comes to the job market, employment in the IT field does appear to be on a strong trajectory. This job sector is projected to grow. The US Bureau of Labour Statistics projects that employment in computer and information technology occupations will grow 13% from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Most universities across the globe are ramping up their offerings to give their students a deeper understanding of emerging technologies. In fact, many are even developing programmes comprehensive enough to produce professionals capable of innovating these technologies instead. At the undergraduate level, students can choose from an array of specialisations that prepare them to succeed in the various areas of the information economy.

The practical aspect of learning information technology takes up the majority of the time. When you take an Information Technology course, you will not only learn the theory, but you will also get the opportunity to create things.

Information Technology Experts work with organisations and businesses to install and support viable computer networks that will keep systems reliable and efficient. IT encompasses all software and hardware used in the creation, storing and access of information. Examples of some technologies that IT professionals may work with include the Internet, networks, media storage devices, databases, and firewalls.

IT allows you to take your career in a number of different directions. Become a computer network architect; computer programmer; computer systems analyst;  database administrator; information security analyst, web developer and so much more!

If you plan to break glass ceilings and get to the forefront of the industry, then this field of study is for you.
