Why study Interior Architecture?

13 June 2022

Interior architecture is distinct from the better known field of interior design, though the two are linked. Interior architecture degrees typically focus on the adaptation, remodelling and sustainable reuse of specific existing buildings, rather than the creation of new buildings.

With the World Economic Forum estimating nearly 70% of the world’s population living in cities by 2050, our world is, more than ever, dependent on people who want to build better surroundings. More importantly, we need individuals with the capacity to envision it before realising it — think buildings, structures, environments and experiences that have never existed before; inclusive spaces for all or places for children to play.

Primarily concerned with the reinvention of the built environment, Interior Architecture is especially interested in the overlap between the public realm and the private worlds that we occupy, and the critical engagement with the social, political and cultural contexts which affect them.

A degree in Interior Architecture gives students the chance to reimagine and transform existing buildings to create inspiring spaces for people to live, play and work. Through this programme, you’ll develop the essential creative and technical skills, together with materials and construction knowledge, to create stunning interiors that are sustainable, inclusive and imaginative.

With a qualification in Interior Architecture or Design, travelling can become part of your professional life. You may be based in an office in New York but have to fly to London to oversee the design of a project you are completing or you may be in India checking that furniture is being made to the correct specifications for a restaurant in Belfast.

The role of an architect has a long and illustrious history stretching back to the beginning of human civilization. After all, someone had to plan, design, and oversee the construction of buildings.

Today, architects are no less important in charting the course of contemporary societies. With the help of sophisticated programs, they use cutting-edge modelling and rendering techniques to give form to their vision.
