Amid higher education's dynamic and evolving landscape, several institutions rise above others, navigating innovative paths and overcoming formidable challenges. Among these, the National Innovation Centre (NIC) and the Kandy Innovation Centre (KIC) in Sri Lanka, backed by the robust framework of Limkokwing University and Sri Lanka's National Institute of Business Management (NIBM), stand as pioneers of innovation in the Sri Lankan education landscape.

We had the privilege of conversing with the Director of NIC, Dr Samira Nandika Wijayasiri, a key architect in steering these groundbreaking institutions, to gain insights into their historical hurdles, contemporary triumphs, and a promising future teeming with progressive plans.

Established under Limkokwing University’s and NIBM’s partnership, NIC and KIC faced their first significant hurdle at the inception stage. The challenge revolved around offering creative and design degree programmes that were relatively unknown in Sri Lanka’s academic circles. Reflecting on the initial struggle, Director Wijayasiri said, “Changing the mindset from going for mainstream courses to a very niche area such as design and innovation was quite challenging.” Assuring students and parents about these programmes’ career prospects and value was daunting. However, this narrative began to shift as the centres successfully graduated two batches of students, who went on to achieve remarkable success in the industry. “We can say that look here, we have graduated two batches, and they are doing great in the industry,” the Director shared, rightfully proud of this achievement.

With the foundation firmly established, NIC and KIC, with guidance from Limkokwing University, set their sights on further growth and expansion. The centres plan to introduce more globally relevant programmes, increase student intake, and enhance facilities to meet international standards. Director Wijayasiri explained the importance of these goals, stating, “People are not looking for a local job. They want to apply globally.”

The vision also extends to geographical expansion, as there is a plan to establish a new dedicated campus in the south of the country, making quality higher education more accessible across Sri Lanka.

The role of Limkokwing University in this ambitious endeavour has been instrumental. The trip to Malaysia, the university’s home, marked a significant milestone in the journey of NIC and KIC. “The main purpose was to ensure that we all teach at the same level,” the Director pointed out, emphasising the importance of aligning teaching standards and facilitating experience exchange to ensure mutual growth and success.

In conclusion, the journey of NIC and KIC, backed by NIBM and supported by Limkokwing University, is an inspiring tale of determination and innovative thinking. As Director Wijayasiri aptly reinforced, “NIBM is shouldering a national responsibility… it’s not very easy, but the future for NIC is bright.” With such unyielding resolve and vision, the future seems bright and promising, paving the way for further innovation in Sri Lanka’s education landscape.
