Officially known as the Kingdom of Spain, the country is a sovereign state located on the Iberian Peninsula in the Southwestern Europe with archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea as well as several small territories near the North African coast.
Spain is one of the only three countries that has both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. The country’s Portugal-Spain border is the longest uninterrupted border within the European Union.
The country is a member of the European Union, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development as well as the World Trade Organisation. The country utilises a capitalist mixed economy and is currently the 14th largest economy by nominal GDP in the world according to the World Bank report (2015).
This capitalist mixed economy focuses on trade export such as manufacturing (vehicles, machinery, electronics) agriculture (olive oils, fruits) and renewable energy commercialisation (wind power, solar, hydropower).
It is currently one of the world leaders in renewable energy technology and the first country to employ wind power as its main source of electricity. Spain also produces over half of the world’s olive oil with more than 1.5 million tons and the third largest wine producer with 3.3 million tons in 2013.
Tourism is Spain’s major contributor to its national economy. Spain was also the third most visited county in the world in 2015 with over 68 million tourists. It is known for being home to the third-largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The country is famous for its fiestas whereby hundreds of festivals are celebrated throughout the year. Considered exotic by European visitors, Spain boasts friendly inhabitants, relaxed lifestyle, vibrant nightlife and world famous carnivals.

Spain’s capital city, Madrid is home to a collection of medieval castles with neo-gothic features among modern buildings. The city is famous for cultural and artistic heritage while boasting some of the world’s most interesting nightlife. Madrid possesses the largest number of bars compared to other European cities.
The country has several world renowned festivals which attract international tourists including the Running of the Bulls, La Tomatina (Tomato Fight) and the Feria de Abril.
It was home of the Spanish Empire, one of the first global empires in the world that ruled for 400 years and was once one of the largest empires in history. This empire reached its peak in the 16th and 17th Century while claiming vast part of the American continent during the Age of Discovery for Spanish colonization of the Americas.
It continues to retain its historic role as a crossroad between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, North Africa and Europe. This helped establish several historical landmarks with the largest number of World Heritage Cities than other countries.
This can be seen in the country’s numerous artwork which plays an important role in Spanish history with influences from French, Italian and Islamic origins. Spain’s unique position in history has produced well known artists including Picasso and Salvador Dali.
