Cambodia founded the National Bank and started printing the Cambodian “Riel” currency in 1954 after independence from France. From 1975 to 1979. The national banking system of Cambodia was destroyed, and most Cambodian people then had no experience or relevant skills in banking. However, after 1979, the new Government re-established the People's Bank of Cambodia. The National Bank of Cambodia had to focus on staff development to improve the level of staff knowledge and professional skills to meet the needs of modern banking.
The number of commercial banks in Cambodia is also increasing. There were 36 commercial banks in 2015 and 54 banks in 2021. Therefore, not only is the number of banks increasing but the number of bank employees and customers is also increasing.
