130 FELDA students on the Global Generation programme in London attended an industry talk where they gained insight into the ideas and mechanics of the creative mind of industry veteran, Illugi Eysteinsson.

Eysteinsson is a production designer and art director, he has worked with directors and crews from different backgrounds, managing teams of all sizes, solving problems and making decisions to ensure the completion of projects with very tight deadlines. He has worked with some of the industry’s top Production companies such as 20th Century Fox, the Muppets Show, Granada TV, Channel 5, Darlow Smithson, BBC, The Globe Theatre, Royal National Theatre and Ralph Lauren.

The talk centred on the creative thinking and the importance of a cognisant rational to avoid unconscious biases.  During his talk he unceasingly questioned every action and drew analogies to the many ways in which thinking was culturally determined by blind acceptance, ignorance and personal and societal prejudices and how to overcome them. Eysteinsson went on to emphasise that it is crucial for truly creative teams to understand how the ‘truths’ and ‘facts’ deduced by common consent and investigation affect the team’s performance and the calibre of creative solutions proposed to clients in the industry.

Inquiring about his industry experience working in TV, theatre, in various corporate environments, and what benefits and challenges each environment brought him, gave students a glimpse into how the industry is.

BA Digital Film and Television student Hairul Azwam B Zakaria said, “Seeing how a professional like Eysteinsson describes the working life and it’s challenges was really grounding for me, while I know it’s not always a walk in the park, but it really affirmed my believe that I have chosen the right field of study when I hear how he goes about tackling the challenges at work.”

After the talk the students were better equipped and knowledgeable about life as a production designer and as an art director. They also learned how to work more effectively in teams that involved talents from different fields.

Hasliana Binti Harun (Diploma in Multimedia, Advertising, and Broadcasting) said, “This lecture was one of the most important lectures for me as I got to see what exciting jobs await me when I graduate. It was really exciting to hear how my contribution can really shape how entertainment is created and enjoyed.”
