"The future refers to that space of time that lies ahead of us. That space of time we now have ownership of. What we do with it today will determine what and where we will be tomorrow."
Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr. Lim Kok Wing
The Man Who Designed the Future, 2007
About the Workshop
The Architectural Student Workshop is an annual gathering of public and private architectural institutions nationwide. The workshop offers Malaysian architectural students the opportunity to congregate, exchange and share knowledge with their peers.
Initiated in 1987 by Limkokwing University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Emeritus Dato’ Ar. Parid Wardi Sudin, the workshop encourages a greater understanding and the discussion of new ideas within the architectural industry.
This year’s workshop brings together over 400 architecture students from 18 prestigious tertiary institutions. It will feature an exhibit, presentations, night performances, and learning modules to be completed as mixed group activities. Prizes await winners for each activity.
Theme
The future will be defined not by geographical size, or military might, or population size. The future will be defined by creativity and innovation.

Listen to what our master planners have to say about the future, what are their thoughts and ideas on achieving utopia, and how to be a part of their movement. This series of talks cover urban planning, sustainable architecture and the Cyberjaya masterplan.
Participants will be asked to design a tactile mural to convey a message and present their awareness of current global issues.
Cloud technology substantially and pervasively changes the way information are being extracted, analysed and presented. Participants are tasked to travel throughout Cyberjaya and, with technology at the palm of their hands, collect data and share it through social media.
Pre-Workshop Competitions: Exhibit
Students are invited beforehand to prepare and submit entries for the following exhibit categories:
Rebuilding the Next
This design competition challenges future architects in creating outstanding ideas that redefine design through the implementation of novel aesthetics, materials, technologies and spatial organizations. It incorporates studies on globalization, flexibility, adaptability and the digital revolution. This competition is divided between graduate and undergraduate students.
The Aftermath
This short video competition asks students to interpret and continue the storyline from the final scene of a teaser clip provided.
The Portal
Students display models and dioramas representing diverse architectural styles from different phases of history. It highlights the evolution of architecture and depicts the essence and identity of selected eras.
The Oracle
Students explore visual creativity and express their ideas through photography. Here, they display captured images that represent their sight of the future.
Pre-Workshop Competitions: Present & Perform
Students prepare beforehand how to best represent their school in the following activities:
School Acclamation
Different tribes have a chant or dance that enable them to be distinguished from other tribes. In this case, each school creates their own chant, dance or cheer that they feel best represents their school’s vibe.
The Axis
Students create a representational structure that reflects their school’s values and characteristics. These vertical 3D representations will be on display at the Plaza.
Evolve, Revolve & Connect
How can one connect one’s self to the future world that is currently evolving? Do you bring the past to the future, or keep them as a reminder? Students answer these questions through interpretative performances for days 2 and 3 of the workshop.
The Gear
Students are tasked to prepare garments of the future that best represents their school’s brand and unique characteristics.
