Limkokwing students showed their creative talents at the Sakura Collection 2015 Asia Awards Grand Prix Final that was held at the Chochin Izakaya, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur shopping centre on 20 Oct.

Nur Irsalina Sulzaily and Tan Pek Han were among the 10 finalists under the University’s Faculty of Fashion Lifestyle & Creativity studying Diploma in Fashion & Retail Design.

Designers were tasked to create designs based on the theme ‘Japan’ which incorporates strong elements of the Japanese culture. The award collection aims to reflect inter-cultural exchange, fashion design and Japanese artwork in Malaysia.

At the end of the competition, Tan Pek Han‘s ‘Float of Line’ design received 3rd place while Nur Irsalina’s ‘Art of the Samurai’ designs came in 4th Place.

“This competition is now in its fourth year and I see that it gets better each year,” said Sakura Collection Producer Noriko Tabata after seeing the designs.

“I am amazed by the innovative minds of Malaysian young designers that were able to take the main theme ‘Japan’, and create designs that pull inspiration from Sakura, Japanese Warrior, Lifestyle products of Japan and the Japanese aesthetic essence.”

The Sakura Collection Awards provided Limkokwing students with an opportunity to gain more industry exposure while encouraging them to nurture their competitive spirit.

“I feel that this event allows me a platform to make a mark in the industry,” said Nur Irsalina Sulzaily. “At the same time, this allowed me to see how other designers work and see where I stand.”

For Tan Pek Han, the Sakura Collection Award was his first time in a competitive environment. He joined the competition to familiarise himself with the fashion industry while learning more about the Japanese culture.

“There are a lot of things to do,” he said. “I am still a beginner and I learn while competing with other designers.”

At Limkokwing University, students are encouraged to participate in various competitions to nurture their creative talents while developing their networking skills. Graduates learn to develop their business contacts and multicultural awareness to succeed in a globalised industry.
