Yip Choon Hong, Limkokwing University alumnus in Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Graphic Design is flying high as a photographer and a proud owner of a design company in Kuala Lumpur. He shares an inspirational story about his career.
Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the year 1981, Choon Hong admits that throughout his entire life he has been creative and so spent over 10 years of his professional career in branding and graphic design.
Complementing his love for design, he also has a strong passion for travel and it was in 2007 when he fell in love with the lens inspired by his appreciation for the things and people around him during his travels.
“I saved up some money and bought a brand new camera then I quit my day job and went on a two months trip through South East Asia,” Choong Hong beamed.
As the journey unfolded, things took an unexpected turn when he was robbed off his new camera barely 24-hours upon arriving at his first destination. Fortunately he brought his father’s film camera along as a back-up and it became his main companion of which he documented every moment throughout the rest of his journey.
Despite the minor setbacks he faced during his photography journey Choon Hong cannot help but credit Limkokwing University for contributing to where he is today. “It was at Limkokwing that I gained my confidence and sharpened my creative skills,” he said.
I remember my lecturers always referred to my final projects as excellent examples and this further drove my passion to become better and better
When asked advice for those who aspire to pursue the same career as he, Choong Hong highlights perseverance as a powerful tool one has to have to achieve any career goals.
“Staying motivated is key because you will face a lot of challenges on the way, how you overcome them is what will determine your success,” he added.
This year, Yip Choon Hong successfully held his first Film Photography Exhibition on which he prides himself. Having put much thought on it for a while he did not confine the exhibition into any specific theme.
His intention was to present to the audience where his instinctive pursuit of freedom took him and his lenses, without the boundaries of time, location, techniques or skills. What he captures are things that chance led him to, and called out to his heart.
