Limkokwing University of Creative Technology
Limkokwing London student, Nursultan Keneshbekov from Kyrgyzstan who joined the Google team as an intern at Google’s European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland where close to 3000 Googlers are based.
Nursultan shared his experiences working for the tech giant with the Generasi Global students who are studying at the Limkokwing London campus for a semester.
For a long time, Google has been rated as one of the best environments to work in, because of its famously fun offices with its gaming zones, free canteens, and much more.
Now, the Generasi Global students had a chance to hear all about what really goes on from a fellow Limkokwing student.
Nursultan was initially headhunted by a Google recruiter and was considered for a full-time position. However, they realised that he still had more than a year left to complete for his Bachelor’s Degree. Once they realised this fact, they asked him to apply for a summer internship instead; one of the requirements needed the candidate to return to his studies for at least six months, which was perfect for Nursultan.
Nursultan duly applied and was shortlisted for the next stage. The initial requirements called for a few relevant documents and the writing of a few essays. The stage that followed was a phone screening process, whereby a recruiter interviews the candidate about his past experiences and interests. That same day, Nursultan was told that he had made it onto the next stage.
The last stage was two back-to-back interviews by the manager of the team he would be joining at Google. Each interview lasted half an hour, and Nursultan described it as the most fun and at the same time, killer interview he had, complete with the famous Google trick questions.
According to Nursultan, the interviews were designed in a way that reveals a candidate’s true characteristics, no matter how hard they try to pretend to be someone else to pass the interview.
After an hour of sweat, Nursultan thought he had failed, only to realised that he had passed both interviews when he received a phone call from Google the following week. The call came from Google’s Product Quality Operations (PQO) division called the Risk Operations Team which combats online fraudsters using Google products, and saves millions for the company every month.
For his internship, Nursultan’s manager assigned him with 50% core job and 50% project work, so he gets a chance to try a variety of things.
Nursultan worked with several other interns, mostly from schools like Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford. The presence of a Limkokwing student proves that the most important thing isn’t the school you’re from, but how passionate you are and your capability of putting that passion into action.
Overall, he described it as a “company to work for, and it’s even cooler being an intern than a full timer, because of all the interns’ fun projects, events and parties.”
Nursultan advised all the Generasi Global students present at the talk: “You find out about the outcome only by doing it. Never be afraid to fail, as failure will serve as the tool to future success.”
He was rejected by many companies he applied for before, but all the failed interviews served as a tool to achieve something bigger and more exciting.
He also advised future candidates to act naturally and be themselves in any interviews, as being your true self in a workplace is the key to major success.
