Govt supports creative industries - Kgathi

In the wake of skyrocketing graduate unemployment, the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture (MYSC) Shaw Kgathi pledged government’s commitment to support creative industries on Tuesday.

He said Botswana, like many countries, currently faces many challenges, which can be resolved by innovative thinking.Kgathi, who was officially launching a book authored by Dr Limkokwing titled “The Future Is Coming” at the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) – Gaborone campus, said it was no coincidence that the Botswana Innovation Hub was founded.

The mandate of the hub is to, among others, promote innovative and technology driven business. He said the hub and associated creative industries are a response to the Vision 2016 roadmap. “The concepts and ideas contained in Dr Limkokwing’s book, “The Future is Coming”, are parallel with the ideals set out by government and encapsulated in Vision 2016 and the National Development Plan 10,” he said.

The book teaches and celebrates innovation for creative education and development. Kgathi appealed to the youth in particular to read the book in order to extract some useful lessons from it. “It is the youth who can generate fresh ideas and innovations that can transform us speedily,” he said.Meanwhile, LUCT and the MYSC signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote youth development activities through various public and private sector schemes throughout the country.

The partnership’s overarching objective is “to jointly develop a plan that will over the years present the arts, culture and sport sectors as major contributors to the country’s economy,“It also implores the youth to realise that the sectors have a potential to improve their lives when treated like business entities.
