Limkokwing University is set to launch the world’s largest high school International Debating Championship at its Cyberjaya campus. It is an open competition that includes scholarships and prizes amounting to RM2.5 million for the winners.
For the first time ever Limkokwing University of Creative Technology will play host to the world’s biggest high school debating championship with the inaugural of International Debating Championship that will take place from the 20th to the 23rd of February 2014, at the University’s Cyberjaya campus.
With over 200 teams participating from all over Malaysia, this challenge is an open competition where schools from the various parts of Malaysia are invited to participate and compete in front of the international panel of adjudication.
This International Debating Championship which is endorsed by the Malaysian Ministry of Education will give an opportunity to the winning team to be a part of the ASEAN School Debating Championship that is happening in Malaysia this year. Limkokwing University shall develop debaters who will be representing Malaysia globally.
The prizes are:
Grand Prize:
• RM10,000 and the Limkokwing International Debating Championship Challenge trophy
• Members of the winning team gets full scholarship to study at Limkokwing University. The team also receives a one-month Global Classroom experience in London, UK.
Second Prize:
• RM3,000 and a trophy
Third & Fourth Prize:
• RM1,500 and trophies (per team)
Overall Best Speaker:
• RM500 and a trophy
Top 10 Speakers:
• RM200 and trophies
“The aim of this challenge is to encourage students who actually want to debate and speak in English. Limkokwing University wants to achieve that students all over Malaysia are very comfortable in speaking English,” said Limkokwing University Vice President, Dato’ Fajura Juffa.
Being at Limkokwing University, all students has the opportunity to meet people from different countries. Thus, the University’s environment builds students who are very expressive, self-reliant and global in their mind-set.
Limkokwing University Senior Vice President, Ambi Mathe said, “We want to develop a core of Malaysian who can be on the global front representing the country and we want to create this brand for Malaysia.”
Quoting the Founder and President of Limkokwing University, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Limkokwing, “This debate is about uncovering and discovering the best debaters in the country, as well as those who are the best thinkers and the most intelligent who will be able to think and speak on their feet.”
“When you’re 16, 17, 18 and you have very strong views about something, it’s only natural that you want to speak out about this and persuade everybody about your views. Having a debating society, having a debating competition teaches young people how to modify their behaviour and yet to get across their views and what they believe is, is the correct answer to the various question posed,” said International House (IH) coordinator, Mr Andrew Clay during the press conference.
The format of this debate challenge is based on the British Parliamentary Style. In this format, there are four teams in each round (two representing the Government and two other from the Opposition). Each speaker is given seven minutes for each team to present their case as the Government supports the topic while the Opposition opposes it.
