Limkokwing University’s Web Maestro

Written by Christine Chan

The man behind the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology website takes some time off to tell us how studying and working in Limkokwing University made all the difference in his life. He tells Christine Chan about his home country, cooking, and what he thinks of the Malaysian information technology industry and its future.

When   is not working on the website for the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, his workplace and his alma mater, he sizzles steaks. The Mauritian national – or Pan Sin as he is recognized by his friends and colleagues – is not just a fantastic webmaster; he is also a fantastic cook for whom the intricacies of baking Tiramisu cake or tossing salad are no alien skill.

With the tight schedules that surround Pan Sin’s life and work as the head of Limkokwing University’s World Wide Web Domination team, it’s a miracle that he finds time to cook, let alone bake, at all. The job frequently requires him to spend long hours that occasionally stretch on to sleepless nights, and Pan Sin often finds himself rushing to catch up with a last-minute assignment that might just drop on his lap.

But find time he does, and in fact, Pan Sin finds time to do more than that.  “Exercising regularly boosts your immunity system and ensures optimum physical and mental health,” he said, revealing to us that despite his busy schedule, he still makes time to work out at the gym.

At Limkokwing University, they teach students to think differently and encourage creative thinking.

It was probably his outstanding personality and go-getter attitude that earned him his current job and position at Limkokwing University, along with his natural flair and deep interest in all things related to computers and web technology.  Pan Sin, whose interest in the Internet and web technology began in 1993 when he started playing games on his computer, believes that the institution where he works and studied offers valuable experience for the young.

“At Limkokwing University, they teach students to think differently and encourage creative thinking,” Pan Sin explains. Creativity needs to be a second nature to him, whose job in managing the web team requires more than just being technically knowledgeable and web-savvy.

Pan Sin needs to drive the web team so that the team continually spawns one-of-a-kind concepts and web design solutions pertinent to the university. As one of the first impressions received by someone trying to find out more about Limkokwing University, the website must not only be flawless in design, it must be cutting-edge, arresting, current, and comprehensive enough to both suit the needs of an enquiring visitor or capture the attention of a browsing one.

The goal is to be the pioneer of new creative ideas that will be the leader in the industry. Those who are interested in this field need to do in-depth research in order to generate ideas and to be up-to-date with current trends.

It can be challenging work, but Pan Sin believes in handling all challenges with a grin. Success is whatever that one truly loves and aspires that is achieved through hard work and perseverance, whereas failure is nothing more than an opportunity.  “It is a chance to learn from your mistakes,” he said.

Pan Sin, whose experience at Limkokwing University began when he joined the institution as a student under the Diploma in Interactive Multimedia Design programme before moving on to acquiring a Bachelor of Creative Multimedia,  tells us that he fell in love with Malaysia almost at first sight. He had visited the country many years ago and decided that he really liked it, before finally deciding to pursue his education here.

He is optimistic of the growth of the information technology industry – especially related to web-related innovations and trends – in Malaysia, but pragmatic about the level of challenges in it and how tight and competitive the field can be. “The Internet penetration in Malaysia is expanding and there is plenty of growth, but this growth also leads to the growth of competition in the industry,” he explains.

“The goal is to be the pioneer of new creative ideas that will be the leader in the industry. Those who are interested in this field need to do in-depth research in order to generate ideas and to be up-to-date with current trends.”

Pan Sin admits that no matter how far he flies and spreads his wings, home is still where the heart is, and at times he misses his home country – the beautiful Mauritius – and his family. But with a growing love for Chinese food and the culture of Malaysia, Pan Sin admits that he just might end up residing in the country for good.
