The learning experience with Limkokwing’s teaching is uniquely different compared to most universities as we are not taught to learn by the book but more on practical side getting you ready to face, and be filled with the right knowledge before you enter the industry.

It’s not too late to change your mind

Beverly Ong has been a driven woman from the get go. Smart, strong and focused are the qualities that have gotten her to the point she is in her life today. Being a Senior Executive in the marketing communications division of Celcom is not an easy feat. It takes sacrifice and determination, sometimes leading to entire nights in the office. Her journey was accelerated in the beginning while doing her diploma course at Limkokwing.
“I got into advertising through the internship experience provided by Limkokwing that helped me to get into the industry after I graduated from my diploma course.”
In the beginning of her career Beverly wasn’t sure which area of advertising she would like to venture into. The internship given to her was a great way for her to test the water and see which area her passion would ignite in.
“During the internship I was in media planning, which is still part of advertising. Media planning is more on managing the budget that the client gives you. But after I completed the internship I decided I wanted to do something more on client servicing.”
University, the drawbridge to real life
Beverly made the choice to join Limkokwing for a few reasons, its reputation being one of them; Beverly realized at a young age that Limkokwing would give opportunities that a lot of other universities and colleges could not provide. Through the universities industry relations, students are allowed the chance to get a feel for the industry before graduation.
“My decision was more on the universities famous reputation and strong connection with the big players in the industries big agencies. I would describe the university as uniquely different. The creativity, learning and experiences are beyond expectation and recognition. There are no limitations or boundaries on getting updates on what is going on in the industry.”

Alongside with working closely with industry she also found the lecturers at the university to be experienced in the competitive world of advertising, not only on the theory and textbook standards of the classroom.
“I would say the experience that I had and the exposure that I got from the lecturers, who are mostly from the industry, they passed the knowledge on to us like what to expect and what not to expect.”
Lecturers tend to play a big role in the success of their students. The preparation involved to make a smooth transition from the classroom to the office is a key point to success. Limkokwing’s methodology is unique amongst other local universities who stick to the book and leave the practical for after graduation.

Branding is big business
Building brand awareness is a very important part of the structure of a company; she can tell you that whatever product or company you are promoting will not be recognized without strong branding. Even though you may work hard Beverly says you will be amazed that you got everything done in a short period of time, and that is the major payout!
In Limkokwing they drive you to expand your creativity, I think this helped me a lot throughout my career so far.

“Advertising is a very fun industry, the exposure and learning is so different from most other lines of work. You get to wear t-shirt and jeans to work and the people you meet they are all sorts of people and fun to be with. Just expect that you will receive a lot of stress that will drive you up the wall. We work hard and also party hard. The hardest part in advertising is the constant demand to be creative, in Limkokwing they drive you to expand your creativity, I think this helped me a lot throughout my career so far.”
Since graduation Beverly has only flourished into the industry which has captivated her heart. If she could give any of you her advice to be as successful as she has found herself to be today it would be to go all out, never give up, do your best and be persistent. The most important thing in life is that you tried, if you don’t like it at least you learnt something and you can use that to go on to a new path.
