Hong Kong-born Nepalese national Amol Gurung has been living in many countries for the 28 years of his life. He shares with us his experience studying in Limkokwing University in Malaysia and his life as the Director of Limkokwing University’s London Branch. Catalina Rembuyan has the story.

Amol Gurung loves his job. The Director of International Development at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology’s London branch confesses that among his colleagues, working together is more like being among friends than merely colleagues.

“The power of camaraderie and brotherhood should not be underestimated. There is nothing stronger than doing things together, working for each other, and together we achieve our goals and learn from our mistakes,” said Amol, who is in charge of the business development, corporate training, and new accreditation of the Limkokwing University London branch on top of student recruitment and the promotion and establishment of the Limkokwing brand.

Amol, whose father is a retired officer of the British Army and who studied in military boarding school for most of his life, confesses that as a child, his ambition was to join the British Army. However, a sense of restlessness to see more of the world after his A-Levels planted in him a desire to spread his wings in a different country, and when he found out about Limkokwing University through an education fair held in Brunei where his father was then stationed.

I grew up in Army camps and a military boarding school, and Limkokwing University showed me a different perspective in life. I learned how to think differently, and I learned from interacting with people from all walks of life and backgrounds.

Discovering that the university offered a 2+1 degree in Marketing and Human Resource Management with Middlesex University, Amol believed that he found the ideal programme for him as it would enable him to spend two years in a new country and then return to the United Kingdom with a British degree.

“Limkokwing University turned out to be a utopia for the creative mind and innovative soul. Here, students are encouraged to think, asked to question the status quo, and given the freedom to create,” said Amol, who admitted that shifting to a highly creative and innovative learning environment was a culture shock from his rigid and discipline-focused education at military school, which he described as being very one-dimensional.

During his years as a student in Limkokwing University, Amol’s ability to pioneer and lead a project begun to shine when he created the Limkokwing Football team to participate in the Sunway cup. After graduating with his degree, Amol went on to study for the ACCA (Association of Chartered Service Accountants), led by the prospects of financial accounting.

Unfortunately, while working at his first job as an Accountant in a property company in London, Amol began to feel that despite the lucrative gains and the prospects of his job, he was not living up to his fullest potential as a person.

“It was at this point when I was approached to be part of a team to set up the London campus of Limkokwing University,” said Amol. Realizing that he was given an opportunity to take on something that would change his life and boost his career tremendously, Amol knew that it was a chance that could not be missed.

Seizing the challenge ahead of him, Amol was soon chosen to lead the team. “At Limkokwing London, we all wear many hats and do not have very specific job scopes,” he said, explaining that the challenges offered in setting up the first Asian university in London means that Limkokwing has become a way of life for all of them.

“Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Lim Kok Wing has always emphasized on creating new leaders of tomorrow. For us to be where we are today, we owe Tan Sri that credit.”

Amol believes that the soft-spoken, encouraging and trusting Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Lim Kok Wing is a truly remarkable leader with fantastic ideas and a great vision for the university. “For a person to manage so many employees in so many countries and the fact that everyone of us here is happy is an indication of his great leadership skills,” Amol explains.

Merging the expertise, experiences and cultures from East and West, the Limkokwing London campus earned international recognition when it hosted the Nepal Fair 2008, opening opportunities for the Western world to look into Nepal’s culture and investment opportunities that are coming with the country’s new government and policies.

“Education is a socially responsible industry and is truly rewarding because the passing of knowledge from one man to another is the greatest gift that can be given. The right to education is a fundamental human right and in our line of work, we have the ability to change someone’s life,” Amol said.

In light of this, Limkokwing University is in an industry where the demand is high. Millions of young people seek education and through our global vision, we will be able to supply the need for education through our unique learning process.

Describing success as setting a goal and achieving it, and failure as a strong word that should never be used, Amol, who was born in Hong Kong though Nepalese in origin, hopes to open his own consultancy with the goal of bridging the gap between East and West.

During his free time, he enjoys playing football, and is classified as a semi-professional in the sport.
