Limkokwing University Students Contribute to Environmental Awareness at FAS Tree Planting Event
12 December 2023
On 28 November 2023, Limkokwing University students showcased their commitment to environmental conservation by participating in a significant tree planting event organised by the Selangor Football Association (FAS) in collaboration with the Selangor State Forestry Department.
This initiative, held in the verdant expanses of the Ulu Gombak Forest Reserve in Kemensah, marked a crucial step towards achieving the Selangor State Government’s ambitious target of planting 26 million trees by 2026.
The event was graced by His Royal Highness Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Tengku Amir Shah, the Crown Prince of Selangor and President of FAS, who personally officiated the programme. His involvement underscored the importance of the initiative, a sentiment shared by the 27 Limkokwing University students who eagerly participated. The Crown Prince’s planting of an Intsia Palembanica Merbau tree was a symbolic act, representing the growth and sustainability efforts in the region.
The FAS, demonstrating its environmental stewardship, sponsored 2000 trees, including Merbau (Intsia), Meranti Tembaga, and Merawan Siput Jantan (Hopea odorata). These trees were chosen for their ecological significance and ability to thrive in the local climate, ensuring a positive impact on the forest reserve’s biodiversity.
The participation of Limkokwing University students was a highlight of the event. Their involvement went beyond mere planting; it was an educational journey that allowed them to immerse themselves in the importance of forest conservation. This hands-on experience provided the students with invaluable insights into the complexities of ecological preservation and the critical role forests play in sustaining the environment.
This programme not only contributed to the greening of the landscape but also instilled a sense of environmental responsibility in young minds. The students learned about the intricate balance of nature and the importance of active participation in environmental conservation efforts. Their involvement in this tree planting event is a testament to Limkokwing University’s commitment to nurturing socially responsible citizens who are aware of and proactive in addressing environmental issues.
As these trees grow, they will serve as a living reminder of the day when the youth of Limkokwing University joined hands with FAS and the Selangor State Forestry Department in a meaningful endeavour to protect and enhance the natural world. This event was more than just a tree planting exercise; it demonstrated hope, collaboration, and a shared commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.
