Lesotho’s Minister of Education and Training Mrs. Makabelo Mosothoane officiated Limkokwing University’s ground breaking ceremony for lavatory facilities construction project for an underprivileged school in Lesotho.

The ceremony was held on 10 October 2014 at Molibetsane Primary School. The school is located in the outskirts of Leribe District in a small village where a majority of residents live in poverty. It has about 200 students enrolled, with no proper lavatory facilities, which is a health hazard to the students.

Limkokwing University took the initiative to build the facilities for the School following a request for assistance by the Ministry of Education. The University’s Faculty of Architecture and Built and Environment (FABE) developed the architectural structure, and the University will be spending up to M100,000 for the construction of the facilities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Mosothoane expressed gratitude to the University for heeding the government’s plea for corporate entities to land a helping hand in community projects. She commended the University on not only providing quality education, but also ensuring that students have a conducive learning environment from the beginning of their studies.

“Today’s gesture is evidence that it is in the interest of the University and all of us to protect and promote the children’s constitutional right to basic education.”

She further outlined that projects such as this one were of a huge relief to both the government and community as the government lacks adequate financial means to cater for community needs, and heavily relies on donations and sponsorships from corporate entities.

On behalf of Limkokwing University, the Registrar Mr. Moroka Hoohlo said the University was committed to providing quality education for all young Basotho and easing the students’ burden as much as possible.

“Limkokwing University is committed to ensuring that all the necessary facilities are available for students to make their learning possible,” he said.
He said as part of the University’s Corporate Social Responsibility, Molibetsane Primary School is one of several schools which have benefitted from Limkokwing University country wide. He went on to say the University intended to continue its philanthropic efforts around the country whenever there is need.

The ceremony was concluded with the Minister exploring the construction site and breaking ground to commence the construction process.
