Limkokwing University celebrated Nigeria’s 55th Independence Day on 9 Oct at the Hall of Fame.
Students from Nigeria, under the Nigerian Students Association organised a celebration that featured performing art, traditional dances, drama presentation as well as musical performance.
Audience members gained the opportunity to learn more about the country’s culture through performing art by the Nigerian students. These include the Oruba Bata dance, Igbo Dance as well as fashion shows whereby students adorned themselves with traditional attires to reflect Nigeria’s various ethnic groups.
The event was graced by delegates from the Embassy of Nigeria. Among the delegates is Education and Student Affairs Minister Adeniyi Oyemade who attended the celebration on behalf of Acting Nigerian High Commissioner Janet Bessong Odeka.
During the event, Minister Adeniyi was delighted to see Nigerian students at the University taking the opportunity to add more value to their educational experience. “This event allows the students to express their spirit of nationalism and show that they are moving forward as Nigerians.”
While expressing his satisfaction to the students, he emphasised the importance of their study at Limkokwing University.
“My advice to all Nigerians is to be law abiding, to be respectful, take their studies very seriously, to be on top because Nigerians from other Universities are also coming on top,” he said.
The Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrates the country becoming a federal republic after being granted independence from the British Empire on 1 Oct 1960. The country consists of 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory and is currently ranked as the world’s 20th largest economy.
The celebration serves to encourage cultural diversity and understanding while preparing students for future global challenges. This event further allows students at Limkokwing University to establish their networking skills within a multicultural environment to help them succeed after graduation.
“Events like this helps to bring people together under the same roof,” said Collins Masanto Adgkez, Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Information Technology. “This event allows us to share our cultural history with other students here at the University.”
