Michael King, a BSc (Hons) in Business Information Systems student from Nigeria studying in the university’s Sarawak campus, left Malaysia for the United Nations’ headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland to represent Limkokwing and the country in a UN musical titled ‘2050 – The Future We Want’ which was held on the 3rd of September 2013.
To earn a place in the musical, King was selected from over 100 talented individuals from around the globe vying to make it into the final cast. “We were impressed by his musical talent and the passion he has concerning the issues that are key to this musical,” said Stephen Swai, Project Coordinator at Peace Child International the organisers behind the musical. “We were also moved by his motivation and commitment to take on the responsibility of building a sustainable future in which future generations will be able to thrive.”
Upon his arrival, rigorous rehearsals ensued for the international cast leading to the day of the performance where over 2000 heads of states and dignitaries filled the famous UN’s Palais de Nations to see what the young talent under Director, David Gordon had to say about the future on behalf of all the world’s youth.
Based on the renowned Peace Child musical which was of how young people take courageous action to find solutions where adults and international institutions have failed, it creates a space where young people of the world can imagine the future they want and figure out the ways that they are going to create it.
The musical was organised to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Green Cross International, an organisation that was started by Nobel Peace laureate and former General Secretary of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev. It was staged by Peace Child International which has been staging musicals about issues relevant to young people since the 1980’s.
Swai said it was an honour to work with the cast and the Green Cross which has done for the environment what the Red Cross has done for humanity. “Our messages about creating a sustainable future couldn’t be more relevant for this Anniversary.”
“I would like to thank Tan Sri Limkokwing for his support and mentorship that has helped me on my journey to the United Nations. I thank the university for teaching me the value of humanity and embracing other religions, cultures, and races. Studying at Limkokwing transcends the classroom. It builds character and lays a foundation to your bright future,” said King.
