Limkokwing University of Creative Technology recently conducted an industry talk that was hosted by the Performance Management & Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) on crime prevention and safety awareness programme for the campus community. The purpose of this programme was to increase crime awareness and to provide information that will reduce the possibility that a crime could occur.
Performance Management & Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) objectives are to administer, evaluate, facilitate as well as to support the delivery and drive of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
The programme which lasted about two hours had educated Limkokwing University students on personal security mobile apps called MySelamat and MyDistress. The programme also demonstrated self-defence especially for the females and played videos on crime prevention.
MySelamat’s main purpose is to send geolocation via SMS and email to your loved ones upon activating the SOS Alert. MySelamat can potentially report the last known geolocation that can be tracked on Google map. Whereas, MyDistress connects you to the police for emergency alerts in just with clicks. MyDistress app service is to alert police when you need an immediate response when a crime is taking place or if anyone faces danger.
President of Community Policing Malaysia, Mr Kuan Chee Heng said that, “Malaysia is definitely a safe country. Foreign students can study and work in Malaysia without fear. There are many government organizations with NGOs are trying to keep the country a better place to stay.”
“Limkokwing University is in a good and safe location to pursue your studies. This is because Cyberjaya is located far from the city where the possibilities are low on crime to happen. Moreover, the Cyberjaya police station (03-8318 2222) is very close by to the university and the police patrols are frequent,” he added.
The majority of crime opportunities are due to a victim’s lack on general awareness, it provides criminals a chance to take advantage of exhausted students.
Preventing crime is the responsibility of everyone in order to have a safe and peaceful environment. Learning effective ways to stop crime is the first step in maintaining low crime rates.
