Five Limkokwing students, Tines Ravichandran, Sharveswaraa Naidu Vanugopal, Shatish Raj Kunasangaron, Theveraj Palanisamy, and Duke Renfew Claverance, impressed the jury at the Merdeka Video Competition with their patriotic video, winning third place in the jury selection of the competition.

The competition, an annual event starting a month before Malaysia National day, was held at University Malaya this year, organized in order to instil the patriotism and sense of belonging to the nation among students.

The group’s short video was a silent film showing three college boys of Malay, Indian, and Chinese descent working together to raise the Malaysia flag which had fallen down from its post.

The group, though not film students, are self-taught, and also learn from their film student friends who are usually doing practical assignments around campus.

The video’s background music was done by Sound and Music student, Satish Raj Kunasangran, who also worked with another group in the same competition to win ‘The Most Popular Video’ award.

Through this competition, they said they learnt industry standards and expectations. They said the competition to them was not just about winning, but a learning platform in which they gain experience and hone their skills to become better film makers when they eventually enter the film industry.

They encouraged other students to take every opportunity available to them to explore and showcase their talents, be it singing, dancing, acting or anything one might be talented in, regardless of one’s course of study, citing their group as an example, where none of them are film students, yet they won a film competition.
