Limkokwing University of Creative Technology
It was no surprise to us when Kelsey made it further into the Miss Malaysia Universe challenge. The former Limkokwing Fashion School educated student is where she is meant to be as she has always garnered the attention of the public eye through University Fashion events, which include the Creativity in Motion Shows from 2007 to 2011 and Hair Show events amongst others. She quickly gained recognition as a fashion forward model and personality. As a rising fashion star at Limkokwing, Kelsey has not only been involved in fashion matters she has also been a student representative in the University and served as a student ambassador for Malaysia.
The 23 year old “Chindian” lass as she likes to call herself, was born to a Chinese mother and Indian father, thus explaining her exotic beauty. She was born and raised in the state of Selangor which is the country’s most exciting state. Her life basically revolves around fashion. She aspires to have a fashion line under her belt and open a restaurant boutique, a longtime vision she has realized and is set to achieve. She looks up to Fashion Mogul Tyra Banks for inspiration and describes her to be a strong individual who never gave up. “Tyra Banks always keeps on coming to mind whenever people ask me who my inspiration is. Reason being she made it through the you can’t and the you will never be this and that criticism. But she fought against all those odds and made it through. I also like the fact that she gives back to the industry allowing other girls to have the chance of becoming the next top models, just as she is,” speaks Kelsey of her inspiration.
Her sharp wit, bubbly, fun self carries incredible personality as she shares what motivated her to enter the competition with us. “Initially I didn’t want to enter the competition because of my height. I wasn’t for it at all. My boyfriend initiated the whole thing and I finally gave in when the height restriction was reduced,” she says as she describes how the fear of her petite frame was a past issue that stalled her from applying to the beauty pageant. She sent a video application to the organization and immediately after doing so she pushed the idea of actually competing at the back of her mind. Until one day on a holiday in Hong Kong when she got the phone call of her life. “I was shopping in Hong Kong on holiday, I remember it was in Forever 21 and this Malaysian number kept calling me. I was skeptical of answering at first as roaming rates are pretty expensive,” she says with a laugh. “I had this strange intuition about it then I decided to pick up the phone call, and the rest was history.” She described the moment as the highlight of her holiday.
Fast forward to now, she feels blessed to share such a rare opportunity with all the other talented ladies. Kelsey reckons that the most important thing this competition apart from winning the titles is sisterhood and creating bonds that are everlasting. “I can recall the very first day when we were told to surrender our cell phones and have no communication with the outside world. I was freaked out, we all were. I honestly expected at least a few days of fights but that motion made us turn to each other for support. I value my friendship with all these girls so much.”
The journey is not promising to be easy for the 23 year old beauty. This is a stiff competition but Kelsey has her eye on the money and will not let anything bring her down along the way. A proud Limkokwing University congratulates Kelsey for making it this far and we offer her our wholehearted support.
